Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout – National Finals - Sponsored by Macdonald Hotels

Juniper family crowned the Lee Westwood Golf Tour - Family Knockout National Champions

The conclusion of the inaugural Lee Westwood Golf Tour – Family Knockout competition saw the Juniper family take the championship with a 3 & 1 win over the Tym family.

The Tym family, of Wrexham Golf Club, had made this competition a real family affair by using a combination of mother, father and son in their journey to secure their place at the national final.  Unfortunately for Dorne, Jonathon and Chris, a current Lee Westwood Golf School student, they were unable to take the title.

Representing the south region and West Essex Golf Club, the Juniper family were made up of father and son pairing John and Charlie and had played their way through three qualifying matches and a semi-final to meet the Tym family at the National Final, hosted by Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa in Tarporley.

The final turned out to be a hotly contested match between the Juniper and Tym families, played in good spirits on a tough blustery day and taking it to the 17th hole before the Junipers were victorious.
John Juniper said “My son Charlie and I started playing in the competition at its inception and from start to finish it has been an amazing experience.  We have meet some very nice people and played at some very nice golf clubs.  I have to thank my son Charlie for basically carrying me all the way to the final and we both look forward to defending our cup.”

The LWGT Family Knockout competition was launched in August 2013 with pairs from across the UK being split into 4 regions of play.  Each family was given three matches to play in order to gain league points where the top four placed teams in each league qualified for the semi-finals day sponsored and hosted by Macdonald Hotels.

Manager of the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Stuart Blair said “The Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout competition provides a great platform for any members of the same family to come together and compete in a fun friendly atmosphere. I refereed the finals and I can say it was a very enjoyable day and a great match played between two lovely families, what more could you wish for in a match play event!”

Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knock out Semi-Finals day - sponsored by Macdonald Hotels.

Sunday 6th April the Semi-Finals of the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout took place across Macdonald Hotels.

The South Region Final of the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout took place at Macdonald Botley Park Hotel, Golf & Spa in Southampton. On the morning of the finals weather conditions were not ideal with spots of rain and a hurting wind.
However all families arrived excited and eager for the day ahead. The morning consisted of two four ball better ball matches to decide who played in the afternoon to compete for the South Region title and go through to the National Finals.

Morning Match 1- Andrew McDonald and Fraser McDonald v John Juniper and Charlie Juniper. The Juniper Family were always in control of this match being 3 Up most of the round however the McDonald Family fought back winning consecutive holes 8, 9 & 10. John and Charlie composed themselves and sealed their place in the afternoon final. Result 3&1

Morning Match 2- Chris Holden and Robert Holden v Manuel Fuentes and Oscar Fuentes This was a very close match with the Fuentes family edging in front during the front 9 moving to 1up at the turn. With some very consistent play from 13 year old Robert, the Holden's fought back to win 2 Up.

The Final

After a quick break for lunch the final was on its way. The match started very up and down with teams not halving a hole on the front 9. After being all square through 9 John Juniper started rolling in the putts with a 20ft putt from off the green on 10 and another on 12 to force Chris Holden to make birdie to half which he did not succeed. However it wasn't over with Robert Holden making a putt on 13 and 15 to take it back to all square. Charlie Juniper handled the pressure superbly throughout the round and holed vital putts on 16 and 17 to take the Holden's down the last 1Up. With the Juniper family receiving shots on the final hole it was difficult for the Holden's to fight back. Final result Juniper Family 2Up.

We will see John and Charlie in the National Finals on the 26th April.

Macdonald Portal, Premier Course, West region Semi-Finals in Cheshire.
John & Jack Bamford vs Chris & Dorne Tym morning round was a very tight match, Chris Tym holed a huge 30ft birdie putt on the 1st to go 1 up and they kept that lead going into the back 9. A brilliant birdie from team Bamford on the 16th saw the match go down to the wire. It was on the 17th tee were the Tym’s had a bit of luck on their side, with the Bamfords hitting first, neither of them could get it close to the pin, Chris stepped up and over clubbed, his ball flew the green, hit the trees and bounced back onto the green where he 2 putted for par and the match was won.
Tim & Stuart Foster vs Jim & Sean Grey in the morning, it was the Fosters that took the early lead with some very consistent play, they were up at the turn and continued their dominance throughout.  A lot of birdie chances for the Fosters saw them maintain the pressure but a great up and down on the 17th from young Sean Grey however saw what looked like the end of the match turn into a fantastic half and the match went down the 18th. It fell to Sean Grey who had a 8ft putt to take it into a playoff, however it just missed and the match was over! A great match 1 up for the Fosters and progression to the afternoon final.

The Final

Tym vs Foster- the Tyms were the dominant group for most of the round, they were 3 up at the turn thanks to some excellent and very consistent play from Dawn Tym. However the Fosters were not about to say quit and they rallied back and on the 16th tee they were only 1 down. Chris hit a great approach into the par 5 to set himself up with a 12ft birdie attempt, it just fell away at the last minute. On the 17th the Fosters turned it on again, a fantastic, towering iron shot straight over the pin saw them have a 10ft birdie attempt to make it all square, as with Chris’s attempt on the last it just slipped by and the Tym’s breathed a sigh of relief. After 35 holes of match play golf, the final went down to the last putt of the day, Chris had only to 2 putt from 25ft on the final green and the title was theirs. A rush of blood saw Chris hit his putt 4ft past which would mean a nervy return for the win. Chris kept his composure under a great deal of pressure and holed out for the victory. A great game and a fantastic day had by all.
Congratulations to Dawn and Chris Tym, 2014 Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Champions of the West region.

Over in the East region at Macdonald Linden Hall, in Northumberia only three families were present meaning a better ball medal was played in the morning to determine the finalists.
Harry & Dean Boyle, Sarah and Ian Riddell and Darren and Keir Stockdale all played some excellent golf on the Linden hall course which was playing well but long due to some heavy overnight rain. Darren and Keir Stockdale started well with putts dropping at 1, 3, 4 for a Nett 3 under start and Keir only 1 inch from a hole in one on the 4th hole. Their final score of -4 68 was good enough to qualify for the afternoon match play. In the other morning match the Boyles played steady golf all day but the long course got the better of young harry and they ended up with a Nett 75. Meanwhile the Riddell’s were plodding along picking up shots here and there with Sarah’s putter doing most of the damage. The final score from the Riddell’s was -6, 66 a great performance which installed them as favourites for the afternoon finals match.

The Final

A close affair for the first nine saw both teams winning three holes, halving three and losing three holes, leaving the scores level after nine. The Stockdale’s did play well and were three under gross but shots from the Riddell’s kept them in the match. The match really got going on the 10th with a good up and down and use of a shot from the Riddell’s to go one up, the swiftly followed that with wins at 11, 12, and 13, the 13th won with a 30tf putt across the par 5 green from Ian, and with a shot they went 4 up, with holes 14 and 15 halved the match was over 4&3 to the Riddell’s. Well played to all the teams – and good luck to the Riddell’s in the finals on the 26th of April at Portal Macdonald Hotel Championship Course.

The National finals will Take place at the Macdonald Portal Championship Course on the 26th of April!
